"The Look of Sound" by Norman Seeff

From 28th September 2014 through 25th January 2015 photography and "Rock-n-Roll" enthusiasts can look forward to this spectacular show. Zephyr – space for photography of the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums Mannheim will be presenting in this exhibition "The Look of Sound" almost 200 images by the famous photographer Norman Seeff. Shown for the first time in Europe. Seeff was born in 1939 in South Africa and immigrated after his studies in Medicine in the 1960s to the USA. He became Art Director of the music labels Blue Note and United Artists.

In Los Angeles he quickly became a star in the photographic music business. He photographed and filmed such music and important stars like Jonny Cash, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Steve Jobs, Frank Zappa, Zubin Mehta, just to name a few, and many other celebrities in his special style. The portraits are significant in their spontaneous vitality and give an depth insight into the visual and musical background of an aera.  Seeffs hidden interest focused on researching where creativity comes from: During the photo sessions, which were often filmed as well, he asked the artists he was photographing:What does creativity mean for you? The photographed artists answered without holding back, because they were busy concentrating on the fact they were trying to show their persona throughout the photographic shoot. This gives us a deep insight into the artists soul. We will present some of this documented filmed session material on monitors throughout this "Rocking" show.

All digital images were printed on Moab’s Entrada Rag Natural 190.

The ConSensus Project with Michael Zide

On Wednesday, August 20th from 3:30-4:30, Moab Master, Michael Zide, will be speaking on Martha’s Vineyard as part of the 3 day ConSenses Festival.  The title for the talk is “Finding My Island, Traveling with Outlaws and it is about photographing Martha’s Vineyard Island for 12 years with two rambunctious dogs by his side. He will have many sample packs of Moab paper to give away!

Sally Taylor, songwriter and educator and daughter of James Taylor and Carly Simon created ConSenses, a project involving over 140 artists from 23 countries. The ConSenses project is about artistic cooperation and interpretation. It is a revealing and telling glimpse into the artistic process across many artistic media. It begins with a photograph, then each successive artist in the “thread” is given seven days to complete their creation — not knowing from whom they would receive their creative baton upon hand-off, nor to whom their creation would go to next, each successive artist interpreted the artistic work that they were sent in their own medium of expression.

As one of the participating photographers, my photograph, “Silver Brush” was first given to a songwriter, in this case, Carly Simon, to interpret by creating a song with lyrics.  Responding to that image, she created a song entitled “Puckerbrush”.

The song was then sent to Doug Kent, Painter, who created the painting, “In the Puckerbrush”,  as his response to the song.

His painting was then sent to Stacy Lim, Tea Blender who created a tea in response to the painting. Next the tea was sent to movie producer and director, Wes Craven, who wrote a short story as his response to the blended tea.

The ConSenses Festival will go on for three days on Martha’s Vineyard, August 18th, 19th, and 20th.  It is being held at the Grange in West Tisbury.

21st Annual Power of Photography Show

The Power of Photography® Show & Exhibit is the annual photography show organized by the Wide Angle Photography Club, Inc. of Pensacola, FL.  POP 2014 is scheduled for the weekend of August 15-17, 2014 at the Pensacola Cultural Center.

This is the largest annual single event for WAPC and it is our chance to show our community the art of photography.  WAPC is one of the largest photography shows in the Panhandle.  You can download the Show Schedule.

The 2014 show will be our 21st year.  Our venue will be the Pensacola Cultural Center.  We anticipate this show to be the biggest and best show yet.

In 2013 we had over 300 artists enter over 1,000 photographs.  Winners collected over $7,000 in cash and prizes.  Over 1,500 visitors viewed 300 displayed images including winners from a variety of photographic categories.  You can download the 2013 Program to get an idea about the winters, events, sponsors, etc.

Numerous vendors from as far away as California provided products, information and lectures.

The 2014 Power of Photography® Show & Exhibit is expected to exceed last year in entries, awards, prizes and visitors.  Mark your calendar for August 15-17, 2014.

Take a journey as we explore the physical and psychological study of pulling back the multi-facet layers that are involved in identifying "markers" that will reveal your subject. We will cover behavioral profiling which can range from how your subject sits, to how they hold their hands. Also covered will be the study of your subjects facial structure, identifying anatomical flaws, and solving with corrective approaches for ultimate portraits. These applications apply to fashion, commercial portraiture, or the classic portrait. Some of these techniques have been used by the master painters which are relevant in creating the most flattering portraits of your subjects.
