The Golden Image

It's rare to find photo competitions that still accept hard-copy prints as part of their entry applications, so you can understand our excitement to learn that the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPA) requires images to be submitted only as prints to their APPA annual competition.

We were doubly-excited to learn that one of the Gold winning prints was produced on Somerset Museum Rag!

Australian nature and wilderness photographer, Joshua Holko, took Gold (and three Silvers for additional images he submitted) for the image to the left titled ‘Blue Berg', which was photographed in Iceland last year.

"The APPA awards are somewhat unique these days in that all judging is done of actual prints by a panel of highly experienced photographers (rather than by submission of digital images). The craft of the print is as important as the image itself and its fantastic to be a part of such an event. All of my prints were made on my absolute favourite paper Moab Somerset Museum Rag. Photography after all “Is all about the Print.”

Congratulations, Joshua, from all of us (up) here at Moab!

The perfect blend of fun, creativity and learning

We've got some exciting news to share about Michael Zide's week-long course up at the Maine Media Workshops later this month.  Zide will be adding a technical printing component to the program under the direction of printmaster Jim Roselli.

The course kicks off on June 26th and is designed to help photographers develop an awareness of their unique visual voice and of the artistic and technical decisions that lead to successful landscape photographs. Students will then be able to fine-tune their images to obtain the perfect fine art print produced on a variety of Moab papers.

The class caps off at 14 people and is almost full.  Head over here for more info and to register.

Moab Symposium

What's better than spending four days in Moab improving your photography and shooting in one of the most beautiful places on earth?  Hangin' with John Sexton might qualify.

It's the Moab Symposium time of year again (May 12-15) when photographers from all corners of the globe come together to attend workshops, photograph the Moab surroundings and learn from the pros.  The four-day schedule is jam-packed with events that we got exhausted reading through the list!

To make this symposium even sweeter (impossible, right?) are Moab Paper prizes, giveaways and the chance to spend unlimited time with our local Moab rep...priceless.

Space Photography

There's something awe-inspiring to see images taken from space.  Usually the images provoke the curiosity in us - like 'how' was this shot or 'what' were the Astronauts doing?

Moab Master, Michael Soluri has some answers. Soluri had exclusive (and unprecedented) access to the space shuttle mission that saved the Hubble Telescope.  Some of his story was recently published in Aperture Magazine and an excerpt can be read here.

With the final NASA shuttle launch still pending, the enormity of Soluri's project comes into focus.  Some say the final launch marks the end of an era.  We're just grateful Soluri was able to document and share his images with the world.  Stay tuned for a national exhibit of his work and a book sometime in 2012. When his exhibition goes up, his gorgeous images will be printed on Moab Entrada Rag.

Shooting this summer on the North Shore

With the flowers blooming so do the summer photo workshops. We're psyched about one that's happening on the North Shore of Lake Superior from August 8-11.

Led by led by Alec Johnson, of AC Johnson Photography Workshops with teaching assistance from Travis Bechtel and Robert H Clark, the student teacher ratio is pretty good considering that space is limited to only 10 participants.

We're told that you'll spend a ton of time shooting, editing and discussing with little downtime, working from sunrise to sunset or later.  August is also a great time to be on Lake Superior with the best weather and no bugs.

Interested?  Click here for more info and to register.

Profiles for the new Epson R3000

There's been a lot of chatter about Epson's new R3000 printer, especially since it features three media paths to accomodate heavyweight papers and a roll adapter.  So when you finally get yours delivered you'll be all set to print on any Moab paper.

We were able to get our grubby hands on the new 13" printer and have been running it 24/7 to produce the best possible profiles on all the Moab papers.

Download the free profiles here.

Moab goes back to school

We're bringing the Moab love to a couple campuses next week - just in time before Spring Break!

WPPI 2011

We just completed another WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographer's Association) show and we're exhausted. The convention center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas was packed all three days with many photographers making a point to visit our booth to see the new Lasal Exhibition Luster 300 paper. We think it's safe to say they were not disappointed.

We had a gorgeous 44" print using an image courtesy of Moab Master, Chris Lalonde (see above). Everyone was blown away by all the detail in the deep, dark blacks.  If you want to give it a test drive, get your free sample to experience this extraordinary new paper.

We also showcased Somerset Museum Rag 300 using a stunning wedding from Moab Master, Jim Graham. The paper continues to receive awards for best new fine art paper (the latest from the Professional Photographer's Association).  If you've tried it, you'll know why everyone's talking about Somerset.  If you haven't tried it, click here to request a sample.

We also exhibited with our Museo buddies who presented their popular 100% cotton artist cards and the awesome Silver Rag.

Thanks to all the Moab fans who visited our booth.

New Lasal Exhibition Luster 300

We spent the better part of the last year speaking (and, more importantly, listening) to as many of you as we could.  Trade shows, e-mails, phone calls, in-store events - we asked what you wanted and we set out to make it happen.

What we heard most often was the demand for a luster paper with weight and rigidity of an exhibition grade that won't break the bank.  Oh, and it has to print better than anything on the market.

Many months and trials later, we're proud to present Lasal Exhibition Luster 300

At 300gsm, Lasal Exhibition Luster is ideal for exhibition and gallery quality prints. Using a bleeding-edge fourth-generation coating, we've been able to produce a paper with an expanded color gamut never before seen in a luster paper.

Named after the La Sal mountains, whose snowy peaks tower above Moab keeping watch on the canyon lands below, Lasal Exhibition Luster 300 remains true to its namesake, incorporating many of the elements found in the surrounding Moab environment: pure crispy whites and deep, luscious colors.

Profiles?  Yeah, we've got them too and we're adding more every week.

Epson's NEW 4900 and we have the profiles

If you're like us and are one of the lucky few to have scored the new Epson 4900 printer, then you're going to love the new profiles we just loaded up to our ICC Profile download page.  And we have to tell you, the profiles are pretty awesome.

We usually get our paws on most of the new printers prior to their release, enabling you to use your favorite Moab paper with our profiles as soon as you hook the puppy up.

Not to toot our own horn (twice now in this post), but we spend countless hours building and tweaking our own profiles to give you the absolute best printing results. Haven't tried them yet? What are you waiting for?

Robert Farber exhibition at the Frost Art Museum

Robert Farber has been a long-time friend of Legion and Moab, so we're especially excited to promote his upcoming exhibition on January 26, 2011 at the Frost Art Museum in Miami, Florida.

Entitled, My Eyes Have Seen, this collection of Farber's work is described as "an impressionistic journey of sublime photographic imagery that evokes timeless emotion and takes the viewer into aesthetic realms."  Loosely translated, this collection represents some of the most beautiful images ever photographed by one of America's iconic fine art photographers.

As an added bonus the entire exhibition is printed on Somerset Enhanced Velvet 330 paper.

Heading South for ImagingUSA

We're on our way to San Antonio, Texas for the ImagingUSA show that kicks off on Sunday, January 16th.  We were hoping for a winter weather break, but from the looks of the past week, we're not too sure that's going to happen...

If you plan to attend the show come on over and say hi to us.  We'll be waaaaaaaay in the back of the convention hall in booth #1445 along with our buddies, Museo.

As a special bonus for making it over to our booth we'll have something really cool to show you.  Can't tell you about it here, but it will be well worth the trip.
