Moab Photography Symposium

The Moab Photography Sympsium was created by fine art landscape photographer and educator Bruce Hucko. The event was born of the need to have a Moab-based photography event after Hucko realized how many out-of-the-area photo workshops were using the area.

The workshops and feature talks serve to model a life in photogrpahy by offering insights into the technical, artistic, and personal motivation of each speaker. "Many people engage in photogrpahy to connect to the land", says Hucko. "While the land is certainly the physical space that we are all attracted to my main focus is to have participatants better connect to themselves through the process of making personally meaningful photogrpahs where the land is employed as subject"

In addition the symposium brings in other national and regional photographers to serve as feature speakers and workshop leaders.

Michael Zide on B&W Landscapes

One of our favorite B&W photographers will be leading a week-long workshop this summer at the Maine Media Workshops.  Michael Zide will be teaching a class titled, As You See It: Finding Your Creative Voice from July 1-7, 2012.

Those signed up for the workshop are in for a special treat as Michael will be joined by print master, Jim Roselli of Xact Studios.  This tag-team duo will present the hands-on essentials of B&W landscape photography and fine art image output.  Click here for more details about Michael's class.

Note: last year's workshop sold out and had a waiting list so be sure to register early.

Ryszard Horowitz @ Hallmark

Last night, Ryszard Horowitz - Moab Master and Canon Print Master - gave a four-hour presentation at the Hallmark Institute touching on his early jazz work, his commercial photography and his epic commissioned projects.

Horowitz is a true pioneer in photo composition with a rich career spanning over five decades.

This was the first time that I had heard his talk and was mesmerized by his forward-thinking images and behind the-scenes stories. Horowitz's work combines artistry with art history breaking every rule to compose an image in his unique voice.

His parting wisdom was to dream big and let nothing stand in your way - especially to those who say it can't be done.

Creative Mornings

Creative Mornings is a monthly breakfast lecture series for creative types.   Think of it as a local morning mini-conference and inspirational community boost before work. Nothing fancy, just good people and a great talk by a guest lecturer.

Free events are held in 16 (and counting) cities around the world.  In the US, the lineup included NY, Chicago, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Seattle.

The new Portland event is hosted by local artist (and Entrada user) Tsilli Pines.

Moab and Levi's Join Forces

Like peanut butter and chocolate, we were destined to find each other...

Tonight marks the opening of the Levi's Photo Workshops - the second community-based venue for collaboration and creative production (the first was last Summer in San Francisco).

The launch kicks off tonight at 8pm with an awesome party and opening exhibition at the Workshop's NYC SoHo location on Wooster Street (between Broome and Canal).

The exhibition, New York: New Work, with Tim Barber and online gallery Tiny Vices features over 30 photographers and their shots of New York all printed on Lasal Photo Luster.  To get your name on the invite list click here to RSVP.

Moab print master and renowned fashion and floral photographer, Barbara Bordnick, will be hosting a weekend workshop on photographing flowers.  The workshop dates are April 24-25 at her studio in Manhattan.

Barbara is the author of three best-selling books of photographs of flowers: SEARCHINGS: Secret Landscapes of Flowers Volumes I, II & III.  To learn more about the workshop and to register, please email info@searchings.us and click here.

Final Thoughts on WPPI

As the WPPI show winds down, we wanted to thank all the people who came by to see us  The initial reviews for our new Somerset Museum Rag have been phenomenal.  The word that we heard the most to describe the paper was "sensuous."  Contact us for samples so you can see how beautiful this paper truly is.

Before we sign off and pack up our booth, we wanted to highlight two events happening this afternoon:

Our good friend Christian LaLonde will be leading a Master Class on fine art printing from 3:30-5:30 PST in room #202.  Chris will be printing his images on Entrada on the Canon Pro9500 MKII.

Will Crockett and Sarah Petty will be giving the final night presentation on portrait lighting at 5:00 PST in room 313.  For those not at WPPI, the seminar will be broadcast live online and can be viewed at  FridayPhotoSchool.com.

See you next year!

The Four P's of Moab

Day two at WPPI - This show is a BLAST!  The overall mood and excitement at WPPI is overwhelmingly positive.  It's good to see old friends and make new ones.  We've had so many customers sharing success stories involving Moab that we have to take a moment and reflect on how truly grateful we are to our customers.

For those who swung by our booth you probably noticed the theme of the 4P's: Print, Present, Protect and Promote:

After the image is captured, Moab's got you covered.  We hope to see more of you in Vegas.

Project Tandem: Portraits of American Environmental Perceptions

In the fall of 2008 two photographers set out on bicycles to ride 11,000 miles around the country to investigate and share what everyday Americans really thought about the environment. Through interviews and portraits the resulting show, Project Tandem: Portraits of American Environmental Perceptions, offers a wide sampling of the current American community and their varied opinions, stories and perceptions of our local and global environmental climate.

Project Tandem will be giving a presentation this Sunday at B&H Photo in New York. Register here for this free event.

Making the Rounds: Northwest

For those of you up in the northwest, we have two events coming up at some of the best Photo resellers in the area:

If you're looking for some one-on-one printing advice, have any paper-related questions or want to see some of our new products, Tom York (who heads up Moab) will be at your disposal on both of these days. Both stores will be offering a 10% discount on all Moab items during their event days.

Hope to see you there.

Lauren Henkin at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, OR

Blue Sky is a non-profit space dedicated to educating the public about photography. Their special mission continues to be showing artists that no one has ever heard of, but will.
